Stationary electric tip dresser machines have been among the earliest machines developed in the automated mechanical industry that made spinning the electrode cap of hardwood desks popular way back in the early 1900’s. Over time, they’ve been gradually modified, enhanced, and adapted for the present day requirements of most consumers. You’ll find two basic types of dresser machines. You’ll also come across a few others.
The first type is the non-contact welded electric tip dresser. It uses two metal plates with hollow wireframe filled with tungsten electrodes, instead of simply using one plate filled with tungsten electrodes like most other dresser machines. This second plate is usually made from stainless steel, which can conduct both current and heat. There are plenty of advantages to having two plates. First, it makes a bigger room for the welding process itself since the wireframe can be held in a resting position without touching the welded electrodes. Also, since the second plate can take up space just as much as the first one, you will have more places to weld.
Another variation on the non-contact tip dresser is the pneumatic tip dresser, sometimes called a “feed roller” machine. The pneumatic part stands for “pneumatic” – meaning “an air compressor that releasing pressurized gas.” These types of dressers use an electric motor (usually a battery powered motor) that feeds the wire the electrodes. While it uses no electricity, the disadvantage is that the wire can overheat and burn if not held correctly to the plates. Because of this possibility, most pneumatic tip dresser designs limit the number of welded electrodes to a set number.
Some welders use a combination of the above two types of dressers. The word “rollers” in the name is short for “reel-feed,” which is a term referring to how the welding guns operate. Reel-feed dressers are designed with one or more feed rollers on each side of the frame, which pull the wire through the large opening between the plates. This type of welding guns allows the welding process to be faster because there are fewer, if any, contact points with the wire; however, these types of dressers use a lot more metal and are less stable, especially in rough welding conditions.
A third type of dresser is used in vacuum line welding applications. Most vacuum line welders have a fixed plate on top of a shielding sleeve that has a smaller plate attached to it. Because the sleeves are usually open in the back, the wire can move around inside the plates. This is why tip dressers for vacuum line welding applications are often called “roller” dresses because they help prevent metal from moving into the welding areas.
As you can see, there are several types of dressers that are available for welding applications. Which one you choose depends largely on your needs.
